WAY TO GO DAVE!

Congratulations goes out to Dave Malboeuf on tagging his first Buck ever at Caribou Log Cabin Resort!  Good for you Dave!  Out in the stand for a mere 4 hours and Dave came in with a beautiful 9 point buck and a big smile on his face! Dave also bagged his first doe ever here at the resort last year!

Needless to say, there was a bit of celebrating and then  back to woods for the afternoon hunt!  We are in full rut and the deer are on the move!

After settling myself in 1/2 way up a ridge and hunkering down as much as possible to make myself small and sheltered from the wind, I was ready for action...Soon after settling in I heard a snort off to my right, but passed it off as buck fever and ignored it!  Another hour and 1/2 passed and low and behold another, louder snort was heard. This time I was sure that it was not buck fever!!  Slowly reaching for my gear, I have discovered that I have forgotten my deer calls back at the lodge!! Hard to call the big guys in that way! Then more snorting! OMG so close and yet so far...you can bet that I will be fully prepared when I next head out to the ridge!

All in after dusk for beverages and chats about our exciting day! Then early to bed for all and hunting resumed this morning. Good Luck Hunters!

Time Away

Sorry folks for the long absence! Just been so darned busy of late! Getting back in the grove though now...
Gearing up for whitetail hunting next week...looking forward to seeing our return hunters from last year!

We didn't have much luck getting any doe tags this year...that would be because we are local I would gather and not tourists.  It seems that the tourists have no problem getting the specialized tags while we struggle year after year with little success....

Of course, this will not lessen the fun we will have hunting with the crew!  Hunting is just as much a social event as it is a sport!  There is so much comradeship amongst hunters, and hanging out at the end of the day for a couple of brews, a bite to eat and chatting about the day, the hunt, past hunts...hunting stories and much laughter and ribbing.....  Most of the ribbing of course is towards the guy or gal who missed their shot.

The first of my hunters roll in on Wednesday and the rest on Saturday..I will keep ya'll posted as to the outcome of the hunt..until then .....Cheers!!

THE WOLF'S DEN!!!

OMG!! This is too funny.Your eyes can truly play tricks on you.  Yesterday I was relaxing after a long day at work and Mark comes bootin in on the ranger with the most exciting news that he has accidentally stumbled on a wolf den on the property.  So being a hunter, this peaks my interest immediately, however somewhat skeptical as I would think that if there were a den that close to population I would imagine that the dogs would have found it some time ago!

According to Mark, he was in the woods digging up shale to use at his trailer to build a pathway when he noticed a large hole in the ground and there was a wolf in the hole with only it's head and eyes exposed. It was watching him!!!  Of course he hightailed it outta there only to realize that he had left his shovel behind and had to run back to retrieve it.  Now I wish I had a birds-eye view of Mark running from the wolf!

He was every excited in his description of this wolf when he got back to the house. My husband, Patrick, decided that he needed to see this den with his own eyes so they headed into the woods. As they approached the site of the den Mark suggested to Patrick not to head in without a big stick for protection!

As it turns out, the large hole in the ground wasn't really that large at all.  It was simply a good size rock that had been moved exposing the hole it left behind.  As for the wolf,  are you ready?  The wolf turned out to be some foliage and his eyes turned out to be a couple of  MUSHROOMS!!

I am still laughing every time I imagine two grown men sneaking into the woods , carrying a big stick in search of the most elusive predator.  So a warning to you all from Caribou, be very careful when entering the woods alone, carry a big stick in case you run into any very scary mushrooms!!

Critters

Well, we have been having some problems with raccoons this season!!! They seem to love the dog food we keep in the garage for the dogs.  We decided that it would be a good idea to live trap them and move them somewhere else,,,, but let me tell you folks that you have to be careful when attempting to trap these crazy lil critters!!  While having coffee this morning with husband Patrick and friend Mark I caught the faint whiff of skunk.....when asking the guys if the smelt it too, the answer was no......However, as the boys were getting ready to head out for the day they entered the garage to find a skunk in the live trap and yes.......skunky was mad and sprayed!!!!! LOL....two grown men,,,running......one throwing up all over the place.....What a dilemma! Who is gonna get that skunk out of the trap and better yet, how are we gonna get that skunk outta the trap without getting sprayed!!!

Sorry guys, but I couldn't help laughing as I watched these two men desperately trying to figure out what to do,,,well one of them anyway as the other one was in the driveway losing his morning coffee!! So what did they decide you might ask? Well a tarp over the trap of course...but they released the skunk in the back yard!!!! Hope the dogs don't sniff him out!!  So now the guys have left for the day and I am left trying to figure out what to do about the chair in the garage that got sprayed,,,(burn it) and how to get rid of the smell!  Too Funny...never a dull moment at Caribou!

Scouting for Bears

Hoping it rains so we can lift the fire ban, but also hoping not too much today! Friend Frank and I will be out on tour today....touching base with our Mennonite friends, calculating number of bear sitings this spring, scouting our previous year's bear baits for sign etc.  Maybe we will pass up on Big Mama's site I have sited a number of bear there (from the road) already so I know they are in there!  Makes me a lil nervous going in with nothing but a knife and an air horn LOL!  Soon it will be time to start our baits then it really gets scary! But still fun! Hunting Black Bear is my favorite sport!

FINDING PHIL

Now I know that at some time or other you have all met someone that had a profound impact on your life. If you haven't then that is a sad thing.  Three yrs ago we met a chap across the lake from us who was kind, polite and very reserved.  His name is Phil.  Over the past 3 yrs we have gradually gotten to know this amazing man and low and behold have become best friends!

Now let me tell you.....this quiet reserved gentle man ......has turned into a crazy, happy, loud funny man! We spend many a weekend together and we are never sure if we will find him tipped upside down in the lake...(oops slippery when wet LOL), or rolling down a hill somewhere!  He is perpetually happy and makes everyone around him smile.  From his cheery "good morning Kim, how's things going" to the end of the day "Holy cow Pat.....this is a good time eh?" we truly look forward to Friday's and a visit from Phil.

Phil has had a profound impact on our lives here at Caribou he is a big teddy bear with an contagious laugh who we love to have around....He picks me up when things seem down, you just cannot be down when you are around Phil....cuz you never know what will come out of his mouth next ...

I truly hope that you all have a Phil in your lives.......Looking forward to Friday buddy we love you!

Blazing squirls!

I'm still laughing about this one! I just love my hunters!  So this guy, we'll call him Joe so as not to offend, was sitting in Big Mama's stand waiting for his opportunity to bag a big bear.  We had suggested to him that if he did a honey burn it might help attract Mr. Bear.  We use this technique ourselves and it seems to work well for us.

So there Joe sits in his stand...and I believe he had the honey burn set up and going, however it had gone out. He had is situated to that he would have to climb out of the tree stand in order to relight it. Now you all know that the less activity in the stand, the better right?  So down he goes and gets the honey burner and brings it up into the (TREE) stand with him!  So he is back in the stand and and lights the burner and and waits for Mr. Bear.

Now here I am just a lil sketchy on how this all happened but somehow, a red squirrel comes along. Now I know what you are thinking!  Of course you are correct, the squirrel knocks over the honey burn setting his tail on fire and commences to jump into the tree beside Joe and wave his tail around!!  Now by this time Joe is trying to put the fire out as both the tree and the squirrel are on fire!

Needless to say Joe did not get his bear that day,  not sure why, it might have been the commotion in the trees, the fire, the smell of burning hair........well,,,it made for an excellent story at the end of the day and Joe did get the fire under control quickly, the squirrel was fine except for a singed tail!

My New Excaliber Vixen!

Wow! that's all I can say about my new Excaliber Vixen!!!  Donnie recommended this cross bow to me and it took a little while to actually find one, but now that I have.......you gotta know that it is amazing!! Out target practicing with friend Richie yesterday and let me tell you that this cross bow is dead on!!  Right out of the box with just a couple little tweaks and we had her dialed in to dead on!!  Took 10 shots with practice arrow and broadheads 150 grain and let me tell you at 10, 20 30 40 & 50 yds there were 10 kill shots and 0 misses between us!

Our target was a deer decoy that we lovingly call Ugly Betty (private joke).  It is the ugliest deer decoy on the planet as one of the dogs decided to rip her head off and chew the living daylights of it!  LOL,,,,we thought she was done, but last deer season he stuck her in the field anyway, and believe it or not she still attracted doe and bucks alike......

The bad thing was that she also attracted the wolves and when we forgot to put her in the blind at the end of one hunting day, the wolves dragged her into the bush and commenced to tear into her.  You can well imagine what she looks like now between the dog and the wolves!

Ugly or not, she still has a lil life left in her and we will continue to use her for bow practice and if she can still stand up come whitetail season, she will stand proud in the fields again.

Changes Happening!!

A little down today...my partner in crime, my hunting guide and best friend, Don, is moving onward and upward.  We have spent the last year and a half working together developing and fine tuning our hunting packages here at Caribou Log Cabin Resort. We have had a lot of laughs together, cried together, and have taught each other many things.  Now it's time for Don to spread his wings ...... congratulations buddy on the purchase of your own lodge! Very exciting for you! I am sure you will do awesome!
Don will be running Moosewa Lodge 3 1/2 hours north east of here.  Though I am sad to see him go, we will still work very closely together as sister resorts and continue promoting our hunting and fishing.  Since Moosewa can offer moose, black bear and lake trout and Caribou can offer black bear, whitetail, perch, walleye etc. you see we have it all covered.

This picture is of Don and I last fall, we had gone out hunting wolves and came home with this beauty Don bagged! Another awesome hunt and totally fun day!

Of course, I will keep y'all posted as things progress!  Don't forget, if you are planning on hunting next fall now would be a good time to book as we are booking up rather quickly!

Home From Vegas

Well, I was away for a bit,,,busy with my daughter's wedding. She decided to get married in Vegas, which was a good idea, since I had never been there before. We had a terrific time at Ceasar's Palace and the wedding was beautiful. But now it is back to reality and back to business. I'ts amazing how far behind one can get after only a few short days off!!

**BEARS**

We caught these two bruins on our Wildview game cam!  Imagine our excitement when we saw these two fighting over our bait pile!  I love the Wildview!
One thing to keep in mind when looking for these cameras is to make sure that it snaps multiple pics, not 1 per minute (alot can happen out there in 1 minute) and make sure that it displays date and time. We have tried others, but these have proven much better.

Having these cameras strategically placed in the field allows us to show clients what they can expect when they head out to the blinds, and what time of day they are showing up to feed!

Bears, bears and more bears!

Time is fast approaching to get out to the baits and start baiting the bears!!  All good but pretty nervous about one bait station!  We call her Big Mama.....she runs about 450-500 lbs....and there are approx. 5 bears in total hitting this bait station!  Last year was my first experience with black bear hunting.....very exciting! Don and I spent lots of hours baiting but both of us were pretty nervous about doing Big Mama's bait!! She was never far away and toting 2 cubs to boot!! We always approached her bait station with caution.....One particular morning when we were in; and of course we had a routine.....in fast! out fast! Donnie would change the SD card in the game cam and I would bait the barrel.....all the while making as much noise as possible....

Now you know you might be in trouble when suddenly the hair stands up on the back of your neck and you hear the very clear, and very close cries of a cub, only feet away!!! They actually sound like a baby calling ma, ma!! Though I had never heard this before, I new instantly exactly what was happening! No words were needed as Donnie and I looked at each other for a very split second,,,,,,dropped everything and ran like the dickens!  Good think I am quick because I think he was close to running me over and throwing me to Big Mama.  We cleared the bush in seconds,,,Donnie still hanging tight to the game camera in one hand and a knife (like that is gonna help) in the other.  We headed for the 4-wheeler shaking and laughing (glad that we made it out without a fight).  What an exhilarating morning and a story we will tell for years to come...

Time to think about booking your hunting packages!!

Okay, so I know that it is only March and hunting doesn't start until later in the year, but seriously folks....we are already taking bookings for the fall Bear Hunt, whitetail and predator hunts!!! How better to spend the day than in the woods.....then meeting afterwards to share hunting stories and  a few beverages....followed by supper, a sauna and a warm bed! Last year was our first year promoting hunting and we had a blast....I expect this year to be even bigger and better!

Hunt-N-Fish Caribou

Don't forget to check out my other sight www.huntnfishcaribou.com!!! Let me know what you think!

Spring Clean-up in progress

So the derby is canceled.  The ice is almost gone now...I tried to talk the fire department into doing a derby in May or June with a BBQ and horseshoe tournament but they didn't go for that.....so I guess the charity derby will have to wait until next winter.

In the meantime,,,,spring is in the air and we are getting ready for another fun filled season!! We are about to start baiting (black bears), in order to prepare for the hunting season. and getting ready to plant our food plots for the white tails!!  Wow that season went fast!!! Can't wait for hunting season!!

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

On to the next project!!

So after some brainstorming we have decided that we don't have to wait until next winter to have a derby...So thinking the plan will be catch and release derby (via boat and motor) LOL...that works, and we can do a BBQ along with perhaps a horseshoe tournament!!  Still have some fun and raise money for the volunteer fire department, and hopefully fill my campground with lots of fun folks!!  Think we should aim for end of May or early in June... WooHoo,,  on to plan B.....

Hope the guys and gals at the fire dept. like the idea. It will be presented to them next meeting......

Fish Derby Update

Well, sadly we are having to postpone the derby until next winter!! Unbelievable that we are without snow already and that the ice is breaking up!!

OOOPS

OOOPS, there goes some more ice! Sure hoping that there is going to be ice for the derby! Kinda hard to ice fish without ice!

Fish Derby Update

So far the ice is holding up pretty good and if it stays cold at night we should have ample ice for the derby.
As this is our first year I am hoping to get feedback from anyone who as organized an event like this as any helpful information would be appreciated!
